Medicare 101 — The Basics

New to Medicare? Here's everything you need to know before choosing a plan, in plain English.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people receive Part A at no cost if they worked 40+ quarters.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. There is a monthly premium amount set by Medicare each year.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered through private insurers. Often includes dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage — sometimes at $0/month.

Part D

Prescription Drugs

Covers prescription medications. Many Medicare Advantage plans already include Part D built in, so you don't need a separate drug plan.
